Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam are partnership alliances between airlines who realized that together they could be stronger.
By sharing routes, lounges and loyalty programs, companies in each alliance extend their services by offering connections across a vast global network, meeting the needs of international travelers.
In this way, companies that are part of the same alliance share the availability of sales of a flight from a partner company, being able to issue tickets for that partner. This action reduces operating costs, also generating savings for passengers.
Star Alliance was the first global airline alliance. Headquartered in Frankfurt – Germany, it was created in 1997 originally with five large companies: Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways International and United Airlines, represented by the five points of the star of the logo.
The alliance currently has 26 member airlines, flying 800 million passengers a year on a network of 19,000 daily departures, in more than 190 countries, totaling around 1,300 airports.
Competing companies that were left out of the Star Alliance moved to create a second alliance, thus creating Oneworld. It was founded in 1999 by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.
Headquartered in New York, it currently has 14 airlines offering service and connections to 1,000 destinations in over 170 territories, carrying more than 300 million passengers annually.
Oneworld is the smallest global alliance in the number of airlines and passengers transported among the three, but it has the largest airline in the world – American Airlines.
Following the movement of competing companies, SkyTeam was founded in 2000 by Aeroméxico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air, being the last of three airline alliances to be formed.
Based in the Netherlands, its 19 members fly to more than 1,000 destinations in 170 countries, carrying 676 million passengers a year.
Delta is the largest company in the alliance, and one of the largest in the world.
